Corkscrew

To a lot of people, the mention of the word "corkscrew" would automatically have them thinking of either their favorite wine, the act of opening the bottle or both. Using the corkscrew is relatively easy. Here are the not-so-complicated steps in using the corkscrew.

To opening the wine bottle with a corkscrew, try to follow the procedure outlined below. You can use a traditional kind of corkscrew for this.

Putting the blade on the foil just below the rim of the wine bottle, move the bottle in a rotating motion to remove the foil. Once the foil has been discarded, put in the point of corkscrew at the cork's center part. When you twist, the corkscrew should keep on centering onto the cork. Keep on doing this until there is just one loop remaining. Put the notch at the lever's tip to the bottle's lip. The whole tip of the lever has to be in contact with the bottle, and if the lever's tip is not accurately seated, chipping of the bottle could occur.

Place the lever's tip against the bottle's mouth. Use the same hand to keep the bottle steady. Take note that you have to prevent the lever's tip from disengaging from the mouth. Bring up the lever to gradually ease the cork about 2/3 of the way out. Grab that cork with forefinger and thumb; get it off from the container. Your corkscrew would serve as the lever for the cork to be removed. Why is it necessary to pull cork 2/3 of the way out? This should guarantee that the cork does not get ruined.

Kinds of corkscrew units

Yes, there are corkscrews that are quite pricey. Prices of corkscrew units depend on their make and added features. One kind of corkscrew is the continuous-turn openers. This kind of corkscrew requires the person to twist the screw to the cork. Unlike the old-school corkscrew, the cork need not be pulled out. What the person has to do is to just keep on turning the screw, and the cork would be ejected. Some brands of this kind of corkscrew has a foil cutter in it.

Then there is the wing-style kind of corkscrew, which is easy to handle. In the process of twisting the corkscrew, two levers are activated that go upwards, and the person would then push down these levers. By doing so, the cork would be extracted.

The 'waiter's friend' is still another corkscrew type. This folds akin to a jack-knife. This corkscrew uses a brace that fits to the bottle's rim, so that the user could leverage against it to pull out the cork.
